How to read the Lab

P&L surface

The surface shows every price and every date at once. Height is P&L, and the colors match the heatmap. The flat sheet is zero P&L; the dark line where the surface crosses it is breakeven.

Switch the depth axis to IV to see the selected date across IV shifts instead of dates.

P&L for the whole position, all legs and contracts

Price-slice chart

The price-slice chart shows P&L across prices on three dates: day 0, the selected date, and expiration. The gap between the curves is what time does at each price. Drag on the chart or use the price buttons to move the cursor price.

Time-slice chart

The time-slice chart draws one line per scenario price, from day 0 to expiration. Each line shows the position’s P&L if the price stays there. Where a line rises, time is paying you; where it falls, time is costing you.

P&L heatmap

The P&L heatmap puts dates on the horizontal axis and prices on the vertical axis. Each cell’s color is the P&L at that price and date, and the dark line is breakeven. Read along a row to follow one price through time.

Time-effect map

The time-effect map uses the same axes. Its color shows how much one more day would add to or take from your P&L if the price holds. The dark time-neutral line separates where time helps from where it hurts, and hatched areas mark where early exercise is likely and the model is less reliable.

The cursor

All four charts share one cursor: a price and a day. Hovering only previews a point; clicking, dragging, or using the cursor bar moves the cursor, and every chart and tile updates together. The link updates too, so sharing it opens the same view.

Controls

Drag to turn the surface and click to move the cursor. On touch screens, swipe sideways to turn it; scrolling up and down still scrolls the page.

Model and limits

All figures are Black-Scholes model estimates, not market quotes or guarantees.

US stock and ETF options are American-style and can be exercised at any time. This model treats every option as European and does not model early exercise or assignment.

Your broker’s prices and Greeks will differ: brokers use live quotes, volatility skew and their own models.
